FSSC 22000: Enhancing Food Safety Through Global Standards
FSSC 22000 is a Food Safety Management System (FSMS) that helps manage food safety risks and ensure regulation and standard compliance. It is built on the ISO 22000 international standard, which defines requirements for FSMS, and includes technical specifications for prerequisite programs (PRPs) to ensure a hygienic food production environment. FSSC 22000 follows the plan-do-check-act (PDCA) cycle for continuous improvement.
Developed by the Foundation for Food Safety Certification in collaboration with stakeholders from the food industry, FSSC 22000 aims to harmonize FSMS globally, meeting market needs since its establishment in 2004.
Objectives:
FSSC 22000 integrates ISO 22000, sector-specific PRPs, and additional requirements, responding to customer demands for a recognizable food safety management standard. It is globally recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) and other schemes like BRC and IFS and certifies food safety systems across various production sectors and services.
Benefits:
- Improved Risk Management: A standardized approach to food safety hazards minimizes systemic complications and enhances risk management.
- Higher Customer Retention: Commitment to FSSC 22000 boosts customer confidence, increasing retention and referrals.
- Wider Market Reach: GFSI recognition enables access to international markets, expanding consumer base and revenue potential.
- Increased Efficiency: Certification streamlines product provision, reducing time wastage and enhancing operational efficiency.
- Reduced Food Safety Cases: Consistent adherence to FSSC 22000 minimizes food safety incidents, contributing to public health and safety.
Certification enhances business reputation and credibility in food safety and sustainability, boosting customer confidence and satisfaction. It also provides a competitive edge, facilitating access to new markets and customers.
