Step-by-step guide on how to become a Certified Safety Professional (CSP)

Follow these criteria as they are mandatory for becoming a CSP.

  1. A bachelor’s degree: You need a bachelor’s degree in any field (though safety or related fields are preferred).
  2. Work experience: At least 4 years of professional safety experience where at least 50% of your job involves safety duties like hazard control, risk management, or safety program management.
  3. A BCSP Qualified Credential

Any one of the following professional designations is required to become a CSP.

  • Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP)

  • Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH)
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP)

  • Diploma/Certificate in Industrial Safety, as issued by the State Government Departments Boards of Technical Education, Government of India
  • If not, you’ll need to pass the ASP exam. In short, one year’s experience and a degree are required.
  1. Pass the CSP Exam: After meeting the education and experience requirements (or holding the GSP/TSP), apply for and pass the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) exam, which covers advanced safety topics.

Exam fee for CSP

The fee for the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) exam, administered by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), is:

160 USD (application fee) + 350 USD (exam fee) = 510 USD

You need to apply individually online. Note that additional fees may apply if a candidate needs to retake the exam or if they need special accommodations.

 Exam Details

To earn the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification, you need to pass an exam administered by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP). 

The exam requirements are:

  • You should take the exam online at an authorised Pearson VUE centre to verify your identity.
  • Duration: The CSP exam lasts 5.5 hours. This duration includes time for reading instructions, answering questions, and completing any necessary surveys at the end. 
  • The exam consists of 200 multiple-choice questions.
  • The questions are in a way to assess your ability to apply knowledge to real-world safety and health situations.
  • A score of 54% or above is required to pass the exam (exact requirements may vary slightly).

It also includes monitoring air quality and other health risks.

  1. Ergonomics

It covers topics such as workstation design, tool usage, and analysis of tasks to promote better ergonomics in the workplace.

  1. Regulatory Compliance

Details of Exam preparation course

  • The total duration of the course is 50 hours. There are two types of batch available – weekend and weekdays. 
  • Weekend batch is on Sunday, starting from 7.30 PM IST to 11 .30PM IST
  • The program runs for 4 hours each Sunday over a span of 12 to 14 Sundays, lasting approximately 3 to 4 months.
  • Weekdays batch is on Tuesday and Thursday starting from 7.30 PM IST to 10.30 PM IST. 
  • The program consists of 17 sessions, each lasting 3 hours, completed over a period of 2 months.
